Wicker Porch Swing: Wind Sailing to Shangri-La

Wicker porch swing are wonderful means to relax as you wind sail. The utopian Shangri-la – the land where tension and age never pervade –  can be yours once you sit down or lounge on such an accessory adorning your porch.

They are light and user friendly. Such accessories can also be shifted from one position to another quite easily.

BE THE DESIGNER YOURSELF

In fact you can very well design your very own wicker porch swing. Doesn’t it sound rather funny if we propose that you make such an accessory without spending anything? You can make them from items that are basically throwaways! Here are the simple tips…

Just ransack your garage or the attic for a worn-out car tire. Next, scout out a twisted rope or knotted iron string that is tensile enough to support at least a ton (of weight). Then arrange a long well-cushioned perpendicular quilt. This will be your ideal lounging slowdown-runaway after the swing. After that find out the ideal spacious space to dangle your dream swing slide. You’d also need some washers, screws and knots. Fix the different parts of the paraphernalia. Now, use some osier sack to cover the tire. Finally, hang your wicker swing at the chosen spot in the porch, and glide as well as slide away to glory. NOTE: Since this wonderful item is quite rudimentary, you need to take extra care to glide into your lounging pad securely. The best way to obviate any injury while you land on the quilt is to wait for the tire to stop and then slowly glide onto it (from the swing, of course!)

TRACING THE DERIVATIVES OF ‘WICKER’

The term ‘wicker’ is a Scandinavian derivative. Wickers are plaited osiers or a set of such shoot of any raw material that can be used as material to make baskets. They can be sliced from the hundreds of grass or bamboo species. Rattan or cane is a popular example of wicker specie; then there are the ones woven out of coconut shells; some are prepared from barks and leaves of trees and plants like pineapple.

Similarly, ‘osier’ also refers to the willow or its shoot that is used to design basketwork; hence wickerwork is the wicker or any thing made from it. The willow is a tree featuring pliant branches from which osiers and timber for cricket-bats are got. Such trees generally grow near water.
